Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real? (The Answer Might Surprise You)

People ask this more than jewellers like to admit. Are lab-grown diamonds "real"? The short answer is yes. The longer answer is that the question itself is a bit confused.

A lab-grown diamond is carbon, arranged in the same crystal structure as a mined diamond, with the same hardness, the same refractive index, the same sparkle. A gemologist looking at one under a loupe cannot tell the difference without specialized equipment. Even then, they're looking for growth patterns, not quality flaws.

What you're actually paying for with a mined diamond is largely scarcity and increasingly, that scarcity is managed rather than natural. Lab-grown diamonds don't carry that premium. That's it. Same stone, different origin story.

Some people still care deeply about the origin. That's fair. But if you've been told lab-grown diamonds look "lesser" or cloud over time or aren't "real" that's not geology, that's marketing.
